Fantastic Four v1 #83, 1969 - Maximus the Mad now rules over the Inhumans, taking captive of the FF's newest member Crystal. On Jack Kirby's cover, scale is exaggerated for the sake of symbolism, yet the final art lacks order and clarity. By contrast, his interiors are not only superbly drawn but dynamically composed. Battle scenes are devoid of text to emphasize movement and action. Of Kirby's three splashes, the portrait of Maximus in full regalia is the most compelling. His expression and slight facial distortions convey a disturbing megalomania. This is 83 of 116 Fantastic Four issues by Kirby.
