Shazam #35 - Don Newton art

Shazam #35
Shazam v1 #35, 1978 - The versatile Don Newton tries his hand on depicting the original Captain Marvel and family, his only story of the entire series. The opening splash is compositionally weak, hampered by the overuse of text. By contrast, the artist's second full page drawing is simply stunning (page 11). The heroes enter the mythological underworld surrounded by foreboding rock formations in intricate detail. Surprisingly, inker Kurt Schaffenberger's friendlier style doesn't assert itself, allowing Newton's darker approach to come to the fore. This story was later reprinted in Shazam! The World's Mightiest Mortal #2. Cover by Mike Nasser. This is 1 of 1 Shazam issues by Newton.

This was Newton's only work on the series, but the stories continued in the back paged of "Action Comics" during much of its run as a "DC Dollar Comic. Don Newton was the artist for that entire run, adapting his realistic details and physical contortions into a quirky, humourous look. This served the whimsical style of writing that DC used in an attempt to maintain the tradition of lightharted stories from the Fawcett comics of the 1940's and 50's.

It may have been Adventure Comics rather than Action, but I get your point. It would make sense that DC would try to replicate the success of C.C. Beck's Captain Marvel circa 1940s. As much as I enjoy Newton's work, I'm not sure his style matched the whimsical style you refer to in the late 1970s stories.
