Detective Comics #400 - Neal Adams art & cover + 1st Man-Bat

Detective Comics #400 dc 1970s 1st Man-Bat comic book cover art by Neal Adams
Neal Adams
Detective Comics v1 #400, 1970 - A scientist ingests a serum that transforms him into a human/bat hybrid. Man-Bat makes his debut in time for the series' four hundredth issue. Neal Adams delivers an overall fine effort, despite the clumsily designed bat-shaped panels on page 9. Most other scenes are artfully drawn, particularly the Man-Bat's shocked expression in seeing his face for the first time. Adams' most arresting image is his cover, depicting the main characters enlarged and hovering over a miniaturized city. This metaphor beautifully heightens the significance of their conflict. Even with the large masthead, the layout's components fit comfortably within the remaining space. This Frank Robbins story was later reprinted in Batman Family #1 and Man-Bat v2 #1. This issue also includes art by Vince Colletta and Gil Kane. This is 14 of 38 Detective Comics issues by Adams. Man-Bat would later debut his own self-titled series. /// key 1st appearance, 1st cover Kirk Langstrom as Man-Bat, Milestone issue

I'm on track to meet Neal Adams - for the very first time - at this weekends Dragoncon, but as good as this issue was, I've chosen a favorite issue of DC Comics series, Weird Western Tales featuring El Diablo to have signed.
