Vault of Horror #37 - Al Williamson art

Vault of Horror #37
Vault of Horror v1 #37, 1954 - Hired as a caretaker, Mr. Dench spends the night alone in the decrepit mansion he now has to call homeAl Williamson illustrates a depressingly dark setting, rife with shadows and cobwebs  (see interior page above). Eerie lighting is prevalent throughout the pages, drawn with great skill and sensitivity. The opening splash displays a distant view of the haunted house, an iconic image nearly perfect in its rendition. Angelo Torres is often credited as the inker, but the artwork suggests Williamson's hand as well. This is the artist's only story on the series, and a seminal work at that. Other artists in this golden age comic include Johnny Craig, Jack Davis, Will Elder and Graham Ingels. This is 1 of 1 Vault of Horror issues by Williamson.

This page does look a lot like Williamson inks- the approach is more painterly with lots of pen work and half tones, while Torres leaned more towards bold, thick brushstrokes. It's possible either artist deliberately inked in a more "gothic" style to fit the mood of the story.

Agreed. Excellent points.
