Jimmy Wakely #4 - Frank Frazetta, Alex Toth art

Jimmy Wakely #4
Jimmy Wakely v1 #4, 1950Alex Toth illustrates two stories featuring the title character. Sadly, his efforts seem strained and almost hurried. Poorly drawn faces and figures abound. Joe Giella's inks further dampen the artwork. By contrast, Frank Frazetta's back-up story is active and entertaining. In the opening scene, Jesse James and his gang arrive in an unsuspecting town, their figures bursting from the panel (see interior page below). Frazetta's brutish faces and muscular horses fill much of the pages, strengthening the aesthetic. This story was later reprinted in Blackhawk #118 and All-Star Western v2 #9. Other artists in this golden age comic include Harvey Kurtzman. This is 2 of 4 Jimmy Wakely issues by Frazetta and 4 of 15 Jimmy Wakely issues by Toth.
