Batman #338 - Don Newton art

Batman #338
Batman v1 #338, 1981 - Investigating a murder of a clown, Robin goes through all the possible perpetrators and winds up with nothing. In this concluding back-up tale, Don Newton's artwork falters. Some panels are clumsily drawn and the layouts too contrived. The inking hinders it further, stiffening many of the faces and figures. The opening page credits are mostly unrecognizable due to poor print production. Steve Mitchell, a frequent Newton collaborator, is the inker. A comparison of other works makes it fairly obvious now. Thanks to one of my readers for the update (see comments below). Other artists in this copper age comic include Irv Novick and Frank McLaughlin. Cover by Jim Aparo. This is 7 of 32 Batman issues by Newton.

Steve Mitchell inked that story. His style wasn't as compatible with Newton as some other inkers, and created a hard line losing much of the subtlety of the pencils.
