My Only Love #3 - Alex Toth art

My Only Love #3
My Only Love v1 #3, 1975 - A mousy young woman accompanies her childhood friend who eventually becomes a famous movie actress. This study in contrasting personalities is not uncommon in romance comics. Charlton comics in general were not known for high quality writing or art, particularly in this genre. All the more reason that this Alex Toth story stands out artistically. His opening splash is all the more arresting due to the curvaceousness of his title typography. His rigid panel grids are largely offset by varying points of view. His graphic approach results in very dramatic, yet efficient visual storytelling. As far as I know, this is Toth's only story for Charlton. Other artists in this bronze age comic include Art Cappello. Cover by Francisco Pujalte. This is 1 of 1 My Only Love issues by Toth.

Toth drew one other story for Charlton at about the same time called "Bookworm." After he'd drawn it but before he mailed it in, he had a fight with Charlton. They'd sworn to him he was receiving the highest page rate they paid anyone and then he found out that the Neal Adams studio was getting more per page for producing the SIX-MILLION DOLLAR MAN comic magazine. So he never sent in the "Bookworm" art. It's been printed in a few places since Charlton went under.
