Rex Allen #28 - Russ Manning art

Rex Allen #28

Rex Allen v1 #28, 1958 - The issue opens with a stunning large panel of two lawmen against the backdrop of autumn foliage. Russ Manning delivers his second lead feature for the series, involving train robbers in the old west. The artist's pacing and page layouts are superb, and his drawings are more finely detailed and executed. His western scenes are breathtaking, conveying the vastness of the west's open frontiers. On page eight, Rex Allen makes a dramatic leap on his horse (see inset above) in heroic fashion and is one of Manning's most exceptional panels anywhere. This golden age western comic issue is easily his best effort of the series. This is 3 of 5 Rex Allen issues by Manning

The "leap" panel, a dramatic instant frozen in time, is a great example of how comics differ from cinema. Manning sure could draw.
