This is War #6
This is War v1 #6, 1952 - Alex Toth's two stories for this issue are an interesting study of contrasts. The first, a war correspondence tale during the Korean War, lacks the grittiness of regular war comics. Inked by John Celardo, the linework feels a little too simplistic. On the opening page, Toth cleverly uses a correspondence note as the story title, but the typography lacks dramatic punch. The second story, featuring two army cooks, shows a superb pairing of pencils and inks. Toth inks the second tale himself, distributing lights and darks in more aesthetically pleasing patterns. Other artists in this golden age comic include Rocco Mastroserio. This is 2 of 3 This is War issues by Toth.

I don't know f I would call Celardo's inking 'cleaner'. Cleaner than the usual war story, but that could be Toth's contribution as well. Oddly, John Celardo is thought to be the 'dirtier' of th inkers Mike Sekowsky used in the mid fifties on his Toth-like war stories and some of the crime stuff he did for Sterling.

Did Toth letter the second story too? Looks reminiscent of Noel Sickles on Scorchy Smith.

The letter "s" is treated the same way on both stories, but hard to say overall. Anyone else want to share an opinion?
