The Rook v1 #1, 1979 - Alex Nino's work in magazines are often overlooked, as in the case of this short lived sci-fi title. His back-up story features a man who was transported into another world and becomes its hero. The layouts are a kaleidoscopic patchwork of slanted panels, placed atop looming double page spreads. Nino is at his most graphic and most innovative, yet the story's readability remains intact. His drawings are strangely unique and his costume design for the hero suggests an old Samurai warrior with a futuristic twist. An extraordinary effort on this first issue overall. I love Alex Nino. one of my favourite comics is his " Repent, Harlequin. . ! " for Marvel. beautiful stuff.
I just found that issue and I agree. It took a while for me to warm up to his work. I enjoy his DC horror stuff but in general it seems his b&w magazine work was more daring. Check out my posts on his Korak backup stories in Tarzan. I think those stories are even better.
