Tarzan of the Apes #157 - Russ Manning art

Tarzan of the Apes #157, 1966 - Manning's outstanding run continues with another Edgar Rice Burroughs adaptation. HIs drawings are consistently superb, and his rendition of Jane is wholesome and attractive. Full of multiple action scenes, the story ends with the birth of Tarzan and Jane's son. This is number 4 of 18 Tarzan issues with Manning art (Tarzan stories). See today's posts or more Manning or Tarzan issues. See also this blog's Russ Manning checklist.

Weird War Tales #1 - Joe Kubert art, reprint & cover, Russ Heath art

Weird War Tales #1, 1971 - Starting as a compilation of reprints, the series features DC war stories from previous decades. Joe Kubert provides new framing pages and a jarring new cover design. Especially eerie is the masthead, which uses Kubert-drawn corpses to fill the interior letters. His contemporary work supplies the more frightening elements of this of war/horror title. Included in this issue are silver age stories by both Kubert and Russ Heath (among others). Weird War Tales would publish mostly new material by its eighth issue, eventually becoming one of DC's longest running horror titles. See today's posts or more Kubert or Weird War Tales issues. X-men #120 - John Byrne art

X-men #120, 1979 - Their plane herded into Calgary by a mysterious storm, the X-men are confronted by Vindicator (last seen in X-men #109) and his team of Canadian super-heroes. John Byrne seems to relish drawing the title characters in his home country, including landmarks such as the Toronto-Dominion Mall and Calgary Tower. Amid the splendid artwork, the artist allows only glimpses of Alpha Flight, either in shadow or in their civilian identities. On Wolverine's capture on the last page, Byrne cleverly uses the wide panel format to demonstrate Sasquatch's strength as well as his massive arm. Other artists in this issue include Bob Budiansky (cover). This is number 12 of 35 X-men issues with Byrne art and/or covers. See today's posts or more Byrne or X-men issues.
