DC 100 Page Super Spectacular #4 - Bernie Wrightson art & cover, non-attributed Wrightson art + 1st issue, key reprint

Bernie Wrightson
DC 100 Page Super Spectacular v1 #4 (#1) / Weird Mystery Tales, 1971 - With this first issue, DC introduces the super spectacular 100 pager for the then-exorbitant price of fifty cents. Mostly reprints from earlier DC horror titles (including the Phantom Stranger's first appearance), they are augmented by Bernie Wrightson's superb contributions. The dark humor of his pitch black cover sets the tone for the rest of the book. It looks even better repeated on the back cover without the text and masthead. The artist also illustrates five divider pages, using himself as host and narrator. Each is sumptuously drawn, enhanced by delicately applied strokes. Not attributed in comic book guides is Wrightson's small illo for the text story, "Childhood Haunt". This issue precedes the regular Weird Mystery Tales series. This is 1 of 1 DC 100 Page Super Spectacular issues by Wrightson. /// key 1st issue

Actually, the cover scares me. It fell like this monster, or whatever it is, is going to get out of the cover and kills me. I’m not much of a fan of horror comics. Comics should be enjoyable and funny, and not horrible and scary. My friends love horror comics. She is the number one fan of Berni Wrightson. I’m sure she’s familiar with this DC 100 pages. Anyway, I will recommend her to enter this blog and read the post. She’ll find it more fun to read than I am. Thank you!

I'm a big fan of Wrightson as well, mostly his 1970s comics. Eventually this blog will cover all of his great works. Thanks for the comments!

After Wrightson's run of frontispieces for DC's HOUSE OF SECRETS and HOUSE OF MYSTERY from 1970-73 he did a series of equally excellent frontispieces (inside front covers, actually) for Warren's CREEPY and EERIE magazines in 1974-75 featuring horror hosts Uncle Creepy and Cousin Eerie. His first, for CREEPY #62, was a beautiful inkwash portrait of Uncle Creepy, and this issue also contained Wrightson's adaptation of Poe's "The Black Cat," drawn in January, 1974, his first comics story after leaving the SWAMP THING series.

Scary,,,Great Review! Well written and quite descriptive as well... If any item or topic comes out then you should be the one releasing it to the public and make it known!
