Blazing Combat #2 - Frank Frazetta cover, Alex Toth, Al Williamson art

Frank Frazetta
Blazing Combat v1 #2, 1966 - A Nazi is impaled by a cigar-smoking GI on this especially violent Frank Frazetta cover. A bloodied soldier lies in the foreground, his helmet still smoking from the fatal projectile. Alex Toth's tale of WWI era pilots is exquisitely designed and sequenced. His aerial dogfight scenes seem to be among the most realistic in comics. Al Williamson on "Kasserine Pass" is the issue's high point. The fight against the Nazi campaign in Africa is portrayed starkly, with deep blacks accompanied by elaborate cross-hatching. From the smoldering ruins of tanks on the first page to the dramatic lighting on panel one, page four (see interior page below), the artist demonstrates a mastery of the medium. This story was later reprinted in Creepy #142. Other artists in this bronze age magazine include Al McWilliams, Joe Orlando, Reed Crandall and John Severin. This is 2 of 4 Blazing Combat issues by Frazetta, 2 of 4 Blazing Combat issues by Toth and 1 of 1 Blazing Combat issues by Williamson.

I'll be posting all the Creepy and Eerie issues in the near future, and some Vampirella too.
