Astonishing Tales #10 - Barry Windsor Smith art

Astonishing Tales #10
Astonishing Tales v1 #10 featuring Ka-Zar, 1972Barry Smith's only full length Ka-Zar tale, his artwork mostly fails to meet expectations. The layouts are poorly planned and executed. The drawings are crude and hurried, made worse by Sal Buscema's passive inking. There are faint semblances of Smith's talent (see interior page below), but overall the story art is among his weakest efforts. This issue includes cover art by Gil Kane and Dan Adkins. This is 5 of 5 Astonishing Tales issues by Smith. /// original page

In the early days of his career, someone described Smith's drawing as the sort that Kirby might do if forced to draw with his keft hand. I realize that the work here appeared well after Smith had awed readers with Conan; but his work of inferior quality did not come as a shock.
