Swamp Thing #9 - Bernie Wrightson / Jeff Jones art, Wrightson cover

Swamp Thing #9 bronze age 1970s dc comic book cover art by Bernie Wrightson
Bernie Wrightson
Swamp Thing v1 #9, 1974 - Nearing the end of his historic run on this title, Bernie Wrightson delivers yet another terrific effort. His artwork is crisply drawn and smoothly delineated. The tone changes expectedly on pages 11-14 due to the uncredited inks of Jeff Jones (see interior page below). Stylistically, the scenes lack the clarity and definition of other pages. Although a distraction, it's not detrimental to the whole. Wrightson uses a clever panel sequence on page 15, dividing up a group of individuals into philosophical camps. Perhaps the story's most memorable scene is a stunning splash portrait of an alien astronaut (page 7). This story was later reprinted in Roots of the Swamp Thing #5. This is 9 of 10 Swamp Thing issues by Wrightson and 1 of 1 Swamp Thing issues by Jones. /// Wrightson gallery

I just want to say how base this review was. How many artists could just drop in cold and finish inks by Bernie Wrightson ? You couldn't even do it after years of 50 years of practice ! Wrightson liked the inking and he would be the harshest critic. He was lucky to get JCJ to help. Novice down.
