Conan the Barbarian v1 #5, 1971 - Far away from his native Cimmeria, Conan is hired to dispose of a dictatorial wizard and his enchanted daughter. Barry Smith tries to maintain the vigor of his previous issues, but his artwork here falls short. His mundane layouts are further hampered by his unconvincing renditions of a tiger. Additionally, Frank Giacoia's inks have a stiffening effect on the pencils. Smith's best efforts occur on pages 15-19, where Jack Kirby's influence is more keenly felt. This story, inspired by Robert E. Howard's poem "Zukala's Hour", was later reprinted in Giant-size Conan the Barbarian #2. This is 5 of 20 Conan the Barbarian issues by Smith. /// Smith gallery / original cover

This was the second Conan tale I ever read - in a black and white reprint of the tale in a British Marvel Annual (1973).

I'd first read Conan on the back step of a friend's house in the first issue of his own magazine, but I only read it once and never saw it again until it was reprinted in a British weekly Conan comic in 1975.

With the Zukula tale however, I could re-read it and pore over the images, so consequently it made quite an impression on me. It's still one of my favourite Conan stories today.
