Phantom Stranger v2 #3 - Neal Adams cover
Phantom Stranger v2 #3, 1969 - After a successful reintroduction in Showcase #80, DC launches this enigmatic character's second series. Neal Adams is tasked to employ the same kind of eerie approach he used on the publisher's other mystery titles. A cloaked figure pulls a boy from a merry-go-round while the Phantom Stranger rushes to his aid. Adams' spontaneous drawing has a looseness to it that may imply the movement of the carousel. Is the Stranger's horse real or constructed? Does the horse come alive due to the Stranger's powers? The ambiguity seems to add to the mystery. It is a stunning visual, and his first of many outstanding covers for the series. Note how the hero's face is unobscured by shadow, contrasting against the masthead and later renditions of the character. See today's posts or more Adams or Phantom Stranger issues. there ABSOLUTELY needs to be a hardcover book of either:
A)DC's horror covers
B)Neal Adams' DC covers
C)both
This is one of my favorite DC horror titles... Neal Adams really produced a great run of covers for this series.
