Tower of Shadows #1 |
1.
Tower of Shadows v1 #1, 1969 - Greed drives an already wealthy couple to the remote, foreboding mansion of a deceased relative.
Jim Steranko breaks new ground on this relatively short horror tale. His illustrative style is graphic and harsh in execution. Dark panels and shadowy shapes are pervasive, emphasizing the house's sinister nature. Steranko's greatest innovations, however, are his precise sequences and layouts. Pages are sliced up into ever smaller panels, meticulously controlling the pace and mood of each scene. The tense interaction between the overbearing wife and her timid husband on page 3 is especially palpable. Amidst a small body of comic book works, this
first issue is Steranko's masterpiece. This issue also includes artwork by John Buscema, Don Heck and Johnny Craig. Cover by John Romita. This story was later reprinted in
Captain America Special Edition #1 and
Vampire Tales #2. This is 1 of 1

I also consider this Steranko's masterpiece & a masterpiece of comic book art in general. One of my two favorites. The other would be P.Craig Russell's Dr. Strange - Master of the Mystic Arts Annual from 1976.

Steranko's cover for this issue was also a masterpiece. It was regretfully rejected, but can be seen at the wikipedia page for Tower of Shadows.
