Captain America #111 silver age 1960s marvel comic book cover art by Jim Steranko
Jim Steranko

3.  Captain America v1 #111, 1969 Jim Steranko delivers another outstanding issue, his second in the series. His cover montage of characters and symbols was innovative for its time and is still arresting today. The interior pages are equally impressive, including the stunning full figure portrait of Madame Hydra on page five, the Mondrian-like layout on page one and the Surrealist-inspired dreams on pages nine and ten (see interior page below). Capping off this extraordinary issue is the dynamic center spread. The star spangled hero launches headlong into a group of kidnappers while Rick Jones lies unconscious in the getaway car. The scene elicits the same excitement as Jack Kirby, who pioneered the two page spread in the 1940s. This story was later reprinted in Captain America Special Edition #1 and Marvel Super Action v2 #13. This is 2 of 3 Captain America issues by Steranko. /// Top 10 Steranko comics / original cover

I was a child living on the Kwajalein Island military base when Steranko's three issues of Captain America were released, and they was amongst the thirty-something months' worth of comic books that were left behind on that d_mn'd island. But I replaced those three in the early '70s, and I'm very glad that I did.
